A crowd clashed with South African police in a black township in Natal province, and seven men were found shot to death shortly afterward, authorities said. Police denied involvement in the deaths, saying the shootings were part of continuing violence between moderate and militant groups in the province’s black townships. Police said the incident began when a group of blacks attacked a black constable guarding a house in Mpumalanga outside Hammarsdale. A shot from the crowd wounded the constable, police said, and other officers ran to his aid, firing shotguns at the attacking crowd.
