Humana Inc. and Maxicare Health Plans Inc. said they have signed a letter of intent for Humana to acquire the assets of Maxicare Arizona, a health maintenance organization serving 1.3 million members in 13 states. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The sale is effective March 1 and is subject to regulatory approvals. The acquisition brings 24,000 members to Humana Health Care Plans, the family of health benefit plans administered by Louisville, Ky.-based Humana, which owns and operates 83 hospitals and has 841,000 members in Humana Health Care Plans. Maxicare Health Plans is the Los Angeles parent of Phoenix-based Maxicare Arizona.
