Spain to Release General Involved in ’81 Coup Attempt
MADRID — Spain has decided to release one of two generals in jail for taking part in a military coup attempt in 1981, the Defense Ministry said Friday.
Spain’s Supreme Court had recommended that the government release Alfonso Armada Comyn, 68, who was serving a maximum 30-year prison sentence for his part in the failed coup.
The pardon leaves former army Gen. Jaime Milans del Bosch and former civil guard Lt. Col. Antonio Tejero Molina in prison for taking part in the coup, in which rebel civil guards led by Tejero stormed Parliament in February, 1981.
