MCA: Talk about a two-for-one deal! New Edition landed another platinum album this year and a Top 10 pop hit. But even with that strong showing, they were overshadowed by former lead singer, Bobby Brown, whose album is at double-platinum (and still counting) and has spun off two Top 10 hits. Shopping-mall moll Tiffany, whose debut album had sold 2 million copies in 1987, added another 2 million to the tally. Pebbles’ debut album also went platinum, as did Belinda Carlisle’s late-breaking 1987 album. The label’s biggest bomb was Olivia Newton-John, whose first album in three years sank without a trace. And MCA still hasn’t broken a young rock band, while its UNI subsidiary did a virtual disappearing act this year--though it did have a strong showing with rap hot-shots Eric B and Rakim.
