ATLANTIC: Despite its reputation as a facelss hard-rock hit factory, this label had its biggest success this year with teen queen Debbie Gibson, whose “Out of the Blue” album went triple platinum with four Top 5 singles. Label stalwart Robert Plant revived his solo career with a platinum album, but lost his standing as the label’s reigning hunk to Aussie pop stud Michael Hutchence, whose band INXS sold 2 million more copies of 1987’s “Kick” album. The label also earned platinum albums from aging rockers AC/DC, Yes and Foreigner. (The label’s association with Island Records also yielded a chart-topping sound track from pop saints U2 and highly touted songstress Melissa Etheridge).
