RENO, Nev. — The University of San Diego men’s basketball team was defeated easily Friday by the University of Nevada Reno, 90-68.
Darryl Owens scored a game-high 27 points, making 11 of 13 shots from the field, for the Wolf Pack (6-3). Kevin Franklin came off the bench to add 22 points in 25 minutes.
“It’s tough to play here,” USD Coach Hank Egan said. “We got everyone in foul trouble. We had some guys play hard and others that didn’t. We were just too inconsistent.”
The Toreros (4-4) were led by freshman guard Wayman Strickland, who had a career-high 16 points, freshman Gylan Dottin with 13 points and Dondi Bell with 12.
The lead changed six times in the first half before Nevada Reno went ahead with six consecutive free throws, two each by Owens, Gabe Parizzia and Chris Rupp. That made the score 31-26, and Nevada Reno led the rest of the way.
The Toreros pulled within two early in the second half on a Dottin shot. But the Wolf Pack put the game away with 11 consecutive points, making it 57-44 with 13:40 to play.
It was Nevada Reno’s lowest point total at home this season.
