Jorgensen Finishes 2nd at U.S. Open

Lars Jorgensen, the 1988 San Diego Section swimmer of the year from Mt. Carmel High School, finished second Sunday in the men’s 400 freestyle at the U.S. Open championships at the Indiana University-Purdue University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Jorgensen finished in 3 minutes 57.26 seconds, behind Turlough O’Hare of Canada (3:56.83). Having attracted 105 swimmers from 11 countries, the U.S. Open serves as the first step toward preparing for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Trailing at halftime, 38-35, United States International University made only 4 of 24 shots in the second half and fell to Loyola Marymount, 74-55, in the consolation game of the University of Texas, El Paso tournament.
USIU’s Sonya Carter (named to the all-tournament team), Amy Hillenbrand and Dawn Crinklaw scored 11 points each, and Fonda DeCree added 10 points and 7 rebounds. USIU (2-7) has lost 6 in a row. Lynn Flanagan scored 18 points for Loyola (4-3).
BASKETBALL
North region winners for the San Diego County Pepsi/NBA Hotshot championship are: Jamie Brossard (girls’ 9-12), Jamie Hooper (boys’ 9-12), Jamie Shadien (girls’ 13-15), Ryan Flanders (boys’ 13-15) and Soheil Khalechi (boys’ 16-18).
Athletes in Action lost to South Alabama, 111-103, to end its 1988 exhibition season.
