Brian Wilson’s new solo LP may not be in the top 40, but since it’s such an outstanding album, I decided to take the liberty of writing my own “review” and sending it to you:
BRIAN WILSON “Brian Wilson” (Reprise/Sire). **** If you were expecting surfing or car songs from the chief Beach Boy’s first solo album, look again: with the assistance of therapist Eugene Landy and a handful of notable songwriters, Brian Wilson has crafted an LP overflowing with sumptuous overlapping harmonies and layers of pop-fusion vocals. From the beautiful, Spector-ish “Melt Away,” to the warm and healing “Love and Mercy,” to the breathtakingly picturesque “Rio Grande”--this album offers all that Wilson is famous for, and more. A major musical milestone. (Pamela Marsh)
