Spear Carrier

Regarding Vice President-elect Dan Quayle’s statement that he was not going to be a “spear carrier” for the right wing, I am a bit confused (Part I, Dec. 1). Where I come from, a “spear carrier” is someone who is part of the stage decorations in an opera. His main job is to just stand there holding a fake spear while the singing leads do their thing.
If, in fact Quayle means “ball carrier,” with all of its connotations of aggressive action, then it makes some sense.
I think I would be more comfortable having him be a spear carrier in the operatic sense, and I have little doubt that President-elect George Bush would, too. It is going to be hard enough getting bills through Congress as it is without Quayle confusing pigskins with pointed weapons. He should be seen and not heard.
