Burma Rebels, Police Clash; 13 Die
BANGKOK, Thailand — A force of about 400 Kachin rebels captured a police station and attacked an army regimental headquarters in northern Burma in a series of clashes that left at least 13 people dead and four missing, official Rangoon Radio said.
The broadcast, monitored in Bangkok on Friday night, said the fighting began Nov. 27 when two battalions of the Kachin Independence Army launched attacks on the army headquarters and police station in Mohnyin, in Kachin state about 550 miles north of Rangoon.
The insurgents overran the police station and released 77 prisoners. Another group attacked the market, railway station and army headquarters.
The radio said the bodies of four rebels were recovered after the fighting while six defenders and three civilians were killed. Four government employees were missing.
The clash was the latest in a series of attacks by anti-government forces demanding democracy and regional autonomy for various ethnic groups.
