USD Opens at Home Tonight After Success on the Road
SAN DIEGO — After two big victories on the road, the University of San Diego basketball team opens its home schedule at 7:30 tonight against Cal Lutheran.
USD defeated Lehigh, 68-58, in the first round of the New Mexico tournament Saturday, then upset highly touted New Mexico, 64-53, in the championship game Sunday. The young Toreros resembled seasoned veterans in front of 17,000 boisterous fans in New Mexico’s University Arena--better known as “The Pit.”
New Mexico led, 13-0, before USD went on a 27-13 streak to lead by a point at the half. USD’s bench outscored the Lobos, 30-10, and outrebounded them, 24-6. Junior Craig Cottrell (21 points against Lehigh), sophomore center Dondi Bell (19 points, 19 rebounds, 6 blocks for the tournament) and freshman guard Wayman Strickland (14 points against New Mexico) were named to the all-tournament team.
Cal Lutheran (4-2) is led by 6-foot 4-inch senior guard Steve deLaveaga.
