City Section Teams Hit Hard by Ineligibility
With quarterback Chris Pikes sidelined because of strained ligaments in his left knee, Sylmar could ill afford to lose any more players for its City Section 3-A Division second-round playoff game tonight against undefeated South Gate. But that is what has happened.
Starters Calvin Edwards (wide receiver), Oscar Romo (kicker) and Michael Thomas (defensive back) all have been ruled academically ineligible. Romo had converted 22 of 24 extra-point attempts and made 9 of 11 field-goal attempts, and Thomas had a team-high 4 interceptions for 110 yards in returns.
In the 4-A Division, Kennedy lost linebacker Ivan Davis, wingback Jay Davis and cornerback Gerry Gandy; Taft lost 3 unnamed starters, and El Camino lost 2 unnamed starters on offense--all to academic ineligibility.
