State Volleyball Playoffs : Mira Costa Sweeps Sunny Hills
Piper Hahn paced a balanced Mira Costa High School attack with 32 assists and 5 service aces Monday as the Mustangs scored a 15-5, 15-2, 15-8 sweep over Sunny Hills in a wild-card state volleyball tournament qualifying match at Sunny Hills.
Hahn, whose jump serve kept the Lancers (19-3) off balance throughout the match, utilized her pinpoint setting to help make possible 8 kills each by Jennifer Smith and Heidi Eick and 6 kills by Kristal Atwood.
Amy Banachowski, daughter of UCLA volleyball Coach Andy Banachowski, also had 5 service aces for Mira Costa (23-1), which plays a first-round tournament match at Poway tonight.
Mira Costa, which was ranked fifth in the nation among high school teams by Volleyball Monthly, jumped to a 7-1 lead in the first game. Paced by 2 aces by Hahn, the Mustangs jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second game.
Marissa Hatchett, who was held to 9 kills throughout the match, had 2 of her kills, along with 2 service aces and a stuff block, to start the third game as Sunny Hills took an 8-2 lead. The Mustangs, however, came back to score the next 13 points to clinch the match.
