Parking at County Airport Shrinks by About 200 Spaces

Parking at John Wayne Airport may be harder to find than live turkeys on Thanksgiving Day, so airport officials are urging air travelers to take a cab or hitch a ride instead of driving their own cars.

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest for the airport, but parking is usually no worse than on a workday with heavy business travel. The difference this year, airport officials say, is that employee parking has been moved into a lot that was once reserved for the public.

“People should arrive very early or use the shuttle services,” airport spokeswoman Sharon Esterley said.

She added that the area previously used for employee parking near the passenger terminal will be used for expanded car-rental operations.

As a result, about 200 of the spaces in the airport’s 876-space annex lot on Skypark Circle have been turned over to airport workers. The lot is in the office park across the San Diego Freeway from the airport.

The 1,829-space, long-term parking lot on Main Street, near the annex lot, is still reserved for the public, Esterley said.

There are 1,199 spaces in the short-term parking lot directly in front of the passenger terminal.
