Two people were killed and another injured Sunday when a car apparently went off a road on Santiago Peak in eastern Orange County and plunged 700 feet, Orange County Fire Department spokesman said late Sunday as rescuers attempted to recover the bodies.

The injured man apparently hailed a passing car and was being transported down the mountain when he met rescue workers on their way up to the accident, county fire dispatcher Jay Quinty said. Authorities were advised of the accident by a motorist on the mountain using a CB radio.

The injured man, whose identity was not immediately known, was treated at Silverado Canyon fire station before being transported by ambulance to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana. The injured man was thought to have suffered broken ribs.
