NATIONAL ELECTION RETURNS : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : Nevada
CARSON City — George Bush won a landslide victory over his Democratic rival in Nevada and Republican Sen. Chick Hecht was defeated in his bid for a second term by popular Democratic Gov. Richard H. Bryan.
Bush rolled up 60% of the vote to 38% for Michael S. Dukakis in a state that twice had given one-sided victories to Ronald Reagan.
The Senate race had opened with Hecht trailing as much as 30 points in opinion polls, but surveys immediately before the election rated the race a tossup.
Hecht bore the brunt of criticism accusing him of ineffectiveness in blocking plans to locate a nuclear waste dump in the state.
