China Quake Toll Rises to 930

BEIJING — Army rescuers and medical teams who finally reached stricken villages today in a remote area near Burma revised the death toll from China’s worst earthquake in more than a decade upward to at least 930 people.
Beijing Radio said that more than 100 people had been rescued from the rubble of collapsed buildings and that many more are believed to be trapped. It said that 1,000 soldiers are involved in the rescue operation and that the central government has allocated $53.6 million. Sunday night’s temblor had a magnitude of 7.6 and was centered in Yunnan province. More than 170 aftershocks had been felt by today.
