Lakers Trade Smrek to Spurs
The Lakers traded reserve center Mike Smrek to the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday for a second-round choice in the 1990 National Basketball Assn. draft.
Smrek, 26, played two seasons for the Lakers after signing as a free agent on Nov. 7, 1986. Last season, the 6-foot 11-inch Smrek averaged 2.8 points in 48 regular-season games and also played in 8 playoff games.
The transaction reduced the Laker roster to the league limit of 12. The two-time defending champion Lakers will open the season Friday night against the Mavericks at Dallas.
