Eugene Patterson has retired as chief executive of the Times Publishing Co. of St. Petersburg, Fla., and was succeeded by Andrew Barnes, 49, editor and president. Patterson, who turned 65 years old on Oct. 15, designated Barnes as his successor at the St. Petersburg Times in 1984.
