CAMPAIGN ’88 : Cisneros Popular in Poll
San Antonio Mayor Henry G. Cisneros remains popular with Texas voters despite his acknowledgment two weeks ago of an extramarital affair, a popularity poll about possible gubernatorial candidates showed Sunday.
The poll released by WFAA-TV and the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, found that Cisneros’ popularity as a possible candidate in 1990 topped that of Atty. Gen. Jim Mattox and state Treasurer Ann Richards, two other Democrats expected to run for the governor’s office.
Fifty-four percent of Texas voters questioned Oct. 21-24, just days after the mayor acknowledged the affair, had a favorable opinion of Cisneros, the poll found. Only 15% had an unfavorable opinion and the remaining respondents had no opinion.
The survey of 1,443 Texans likely to vote in the Nov. 8 election found that 45% liked Richards, whereas 24% had an unfavorable opinion of her. Forty-four percent liked Mattox, contrasted with 26% who disliked the controversial attorney general.
