Brazil’s Ayrton Senna posted the fastest lap in the first official qualifying session for the Japan Grand Prix auto race.
Senna drove his McLaren-Honda over the 3.6-mile Suzuka Circuit course in 1 minute 42.157 seconds, an average speed of 128.29 m.p.h.
Gerhard Berger of Austria, winner of the 1987 Japan Grand Prix, had the second-fastest time, 1:43.548, in a Ferrari. Senna’s teammate, Alain Prost of France, was third at 1:43.806.
