The Canadian Weightlifting Federation in Ottawa wants any country producing a weightlifter with a positive drug test during the Summer Olympics banned in that sport for the next Games.
The federation also wants the country of a weightlifter caught cheating at the World Championships suspended from international competition for a year.
Philippe Saint-Cyr will carry these two Federation recommendations to Budapest, Hungary, for an emergency meeting of the International Weightlifting Federation Nov. 15-16.
Two Bulgarian gold medalists were stripped of medals after testing positive for the weight-loss drug furosemide, which hides the presence of anabolic steroids. The Bulgarian Olympic Assn. then sent home the entire weightlifting team. Four Canadian weightlifters tested positive for anabolic steroids, a hormone drug used to promote growth and muscle bulk, before the Games.
