PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : Norman’s Interception Gets Ocean View Started in 28-8 Win
Ocean View High School linebacker Todd Norman intercepted a Huntington Beach pass and returned it 78 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, sending the Seahawks on their way to a 28-8 Sunset League victory Friday in front of 800 at Westminster High.
Huntington Beach had driven into Ocean View territory when Norman picked off a pass in the flat and ran it back for a score, a play Huntington Beach Coach George Pascoe called devastating.
“All of a sudden, when you think you’re going up 7-0, then they intercept and they’re up 7-0,” Pascoe said. “It turned (the game) around.”
Huntington Beach (2-6, 1-2) played most of the game without starting quarterback Eric Pettinato, who injured a knee on the team’s second offensive series. He will miss the rest of the season. Backup quarterback Chris Will replaced him and completed 9 of 35 passes for 108 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Ocean View (4-4, 1-2) was led by quarterback Randy Karliner, who completed 5 of 12 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Ocean View scored twice in the second quarter, first on Quincy Bennett’s 1-yard run with 3:07 remaining and then on a 14-yard pass from Karliner to Greg Szuba with 48 seconds remaining. The second score was set up when Brett Reed intercepted a pass on the Huntington Beach 32-yard line, 3 plays after the Seahawk kickoff.
