Local News in Brief : Pool Heating Unit to Be Tested
A Southern California Edison experimental generating unit will be used to heat the swimming pool at Palos Verdes High School.
The Palos Verdes Estates City Council this week approved a conditional use permit to allow installation of the $110,000 “cogeneration” unit.
The experimental equipment is a modified automotive engine that burns natural gas to produce power. The heat it produces will be used to warm the school pool--a boon to the financially troubled Palos Verdes school district.
The unit, which can produce enough power to support 60 average homes, is expected to be installed by the end of November, said Michael Smith, Edison’s area manager.
