An Expanded ‘Africa’

If you thought “Out of Africa” was long when you saw it at the movies--160 minutes--how about the TV version that ran last week on CBS! Director Sydney Pollack padded it for the network by 20 minutes so CBS could play it over two nights, in a pair of two-hour time slots. (One of the added scenes had Robert Redford speaking in a native tongue to some elephants!)

Pollack told us that Universal Pictures, the film’s distributor, received “substantially more” money for the film’s network TV sale because of those extra minutes.
