Detective Writer Chandler’s L.A.
Hearty thanks should be extended to Paul Feldman for his fine article on one of my heroes, Raymond Chandler (“Raymond Chandler’s L.A. Joins in Celebrating Him,” Part I, Oct. 10). How many have noted the fact that 1988 is the 100th anniversary of two giants in literature? Chandler, as neatly chronicled by Feldman, and my other literary hero, T.S. Eliot. Although writers of wildly disparate genre, their contributions to the body of 20th-Century literature is monumental.
Regarding the filmed versions of Chandler’s novels, my only quarrel with Feldman’s masterful job is with his glaring omission of any mention of the original Philip Marlowe, Dick Powell. And another actor who also played the role (“Lady in the Lake”), Robert Montgomery, was slighted as well.
