Empire League : PREP FOOTBALL : El Dorado Stops Late Loara Push for Empire Victory
El Dorado High School evened its Empire League football record at 1-1 Thursday, holding off Loara, 27-20, in front of about 400 spectators at Valencia High School.
The Golden Hawks (3-4) were led by tailback Lance Keeter, who rushed for 68 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 carries. Loara is 4-2-1, 0-1-1.
El Dorado quarterback David Swearingen was 5 of 7 for 69 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a 54-yard scramble to give his team a 13-6 lead with 29 seconds left in the first quarter.
El Dorado pushed the lead to 27-12 in the fourth quarter, but Loara cut it to 27-20 with 1:22 left to play on a 5-yard run by Randy Halcomb and a 2-point conversion.
Loara had a chance to win after recovering the onsides kick that followed, but was unable to score in the final 1:16.
Halcomb rushed for 115 yards in 8 carries, and quarterback Jeff Gordon was 12 of 23 for 200 yards and a touchdown for Loara.
