Whales’ Fate Rides With Copter

BARROW, Alaska — Scientists today pinned their hopes on a helicopter carrying a 7-ton block of concrete for rescuing three California gray whales trapped almost two weeks by 20-inch-thick Arctic ice.
Battling subzero temperatures, scientists planned to begin using a Skycrane helicopter later in the day to smash holes in the ice with the gigantic concrete “yo-yo.” They hope to lead the whales from hole to hole to the open sea.
