Cipher Data Products, a manufacturer of computer tape drives, reported a first-quarter profit of $3.8 million on sales of $52 million, up from a $686,000 profit on sales of $39.3 million over the same three months last year.

The profit includes $2 million in non-recurring pretax income related to amounts paid by Rexon as part of a patent infringement litigation won by Cipher Data earlier this year.
