New York Times Co.’s third-quarter earnings fell 18% from a year ago to $26.7 million. Company officials said the performance primarily reflected lower advertising volume at the New York Times, where linage was 8% below a year ago, higher newsprint prices and costs associated with the newspaper’s expanded national editions introduced in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
