Pasadena : Professor Heads Team
Edward C. Stone Jr., professor of physics, has been elected vice president for astronomical facilities at Caltech.
In his new post, Stone will head the school’s participation in constructing the W. M. Keck Observatory and Telescope in Hawaii. The 400-inch telescope is being built on the Mauna Kea volcanic peak on the island of Hawaii with a $70-million bequest from the W. M. Keck Foundation. When completed it will be the world’s largest telescope.
Stone is chairman of the physics, mathematics and astronomy division at Caltech. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1984.
