LAS VEGAS — A gunman who tried to steal millions of dollars worth of jewelry from the Liberace Museum was shot dead by police when he tried to escape with an elderly woman hostage and the woman broke free from his grip, police said Monday.
Police said Hugh Perry, 47, entered the museum Sunday night and demanded that manager Margaret Bloomberg, 74, hand over the jewelry of the late entertainer.
A cleaning woman called police. When Perry saw officers, he took Bloomberg hostage and attempted to leave.
When Perry refused to give himself up, Bloomberg broke loose and dropped to the ground, police said. Officers opened fire and one bullet struck Perry in the chest.
