A 40-year-old woman piloting a sailplane was killed when her aircraft crashed into Coyote Mountain, 6 miles north of Borrego Valley Airport, authorities announced Sunday.
The woman was identified as Linda Gaye Beran of Chula Vista. She was a medical technician at AMI Valley Hospital in El Cajon.
Deputy Coroner Cal Vine said Beran was flying with six other gliders Saturday when one of the other pilots discovered her glider had crashed into the mountain.
Vine said Beran died of extensive internal injuries.
In Los Angeles, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said the cause of the crash was under investigation. The sailplane was destroyed.
