Police in Peru arrested 30 union leaders, including four top officials of the General Confederation of Workers of Peru, the country’s largest labor coalition, as workers defied the government to stage a 24-hour nationwide strike. Hundreds of other people were reportedly arrested around the country after strikers clashed with police. President Alan Garcia called the strike a failure. The Communist-led labor group, with 1.8 million members, called the walkout to protest anti-inflation measures that doubled food prices and devalued the national currency.
