South African-backed Minerals & Resources Corp. has raised its stake in its hostile takeover target Consolidated Gold Fields PLC, the British mining giant, industry sources said. Luxembourg-based Minorco--which is controlled by Anglo American Corp. of South Africa Ltd. and DeBeers Consolidated Mines Ltd.--raised its Cons Gold holdings to 29.05% from 28.9% on purchases made this week. In September, Minorco launched the takeover bid, offering $22.67 (13.06 pounds) a share for the 70.1% of Cons Gold it did not already own at the time.
