COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Big Eight Roundup : Sanders Rushes for 304 Yards, 5 Touchdowns in 56-35 Win

Barry Sanders rushed for 304 yards and a Big Eight-record 5 touchdowns Saturday night to fuel No. 13 Oklahoma State’s 545-yard offensive attack in the Cowboys’ 56-35 triumph over Tulsa at Stillwater, Okla.

Rueben Mayes set the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. single-game rushing record while playing for Washington State in 1984, when he gained 357 against Oregon.

Oklahoma State (3-0) scored more than 50 points for the third straight game. Sanders, who carried 33 times, had touchdown runs of 35, 26, 11, 7 and 9 yards.

Trailing, 41-0, in the third quarter, Tulsa (1-3) scored 4 straight touchdowns, as T.J. Rubley threw for 297 yards and 2 scores.

Oklahoma State also scored on field goals of 30 and 28 yards by Cary Blanchard, Mike Gundy’s 10-yard pass to Jarrod Green, and Hart Lee Dykes’ recovery of a Sanders fumble in the end zone.

Tulsa’s third-quarter rally included a 3-yard touchdown run by Donnie Maloney, Rubley touchdown passes of 27 yards to Dan Bitson and 14 yards to Eric Harrison, and a 64-yard scoring pass from punter Danny Phelps to cornerback Mark Palmer. Brett Adams added a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth period.

Nebraska 48, Nevada Las Vegas 6--Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne wanted his team to shine in its nonconference season finale, and a nonconference victory at Lincoln, Neb., might have indicated the ninth-ranked Cornhuskers did something right.

But Osborne said, for the most part, it wasn’t pretty.

“We played well enough to win,” he said as his Cornhuskers improved to 4-1. “I was not too happy with the offense. (At halftime) I just told them what they did, which was not much.”

Despite running back Ken Clark’s 3-touchdown effort, Nebraska sputtered against a team it was expected to dominate. The loss was the third in four games for UNLV.

New Mexico State 42, Kansas 29--Dat Ly kicked a school-record 5 field goals in the first half and Anthony Singleton scored 3 second-half touchdowns as New Mexico State snapped its 8-game losing streak with a nonconference win at Lawrence, Kan.

Ly had first-half kicks of 38, 22, 22, 36 and 39 yards, tying the NCAA I-A record for field goals in a half, and Singleton scored on second-half runs of 23 and 10 yards and had a 14-yard reception for a score to help New Mexico State (1-4) celebrate Coach Mike Knoll’s 37th birthday.

The Aggies scored after 5 of 6 Kansas turnovers--4 fumbles and 2 interceptions.

Oklahoma 35, Iowa State 7--Jamelle Holieway threw 2 touchdown passes as 10th-ranked Oklahoma rolled in a Big Eight game at Norman, Okla.

Holieway completed all 5 of his passes for 113 yards. His 12-yard touchdown pass to Carl Cabiness on the Sooners’ last drive of the first half and 13-yard scoring toss to Eric Bross on the opening drive of the second half gave Oklahoma a 28-7 lead.

The Sooners (3-1) have won 26 straight conference games and have not lost to Iowa State since 1961.

The Cyclones (1-3) scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Bret Oberg to Mike Busch in the second quarter. That was the first touchdown Iowa State has scored against Oklahoma in 3 years.

Oberg, who completed 10 of 17 passes for 68 yards, spent much of the cold, rainy afternoon avoiding the Sooner pass rush. Oklahoma had 7 sacks.

Charles Thompson, who shared playing time at quarterback with Holieway, rushed for 85 yards, including runs of 31 and 29 yards.

Louisiana Tech 31, Kansas State 28--Matt Stover’s third field goal of the game, a 44-yarder with 2:49 to play, capped a 21-point comeback that gave the Techsters a nonconference win at Manhattan, Kan.

Kansas State, 0-4 and winless in its last 20 games, led, 28-7, at halftime behind the passing of Paul Watson, who completed 18 of 42 passes for 362 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first start.
