Former Yugoslav Communist Party chief Bosko Krunic resigned from the party’s ruling Politburo as hundreds of thousands of people demonstrated in support of Serbia’s bid for greater control over its two autonomous provinces, Kosovo and Vojvodina. The Yugoslav Tanjug news agency said an estimated 370,000 Serbs demonstrated at five rallies in the republic of Serbia over the alleged persecution of Slavs by the ethnic Albanian majority in Kosovo. In announcing his resignation, Krunic, 58, said he had been exposed to “unprincipled calls and unproven accusations and slanders in Yugoslav media and in public rallies for the past three months.”
