Katella 7, Costa Mesa 7--A 53-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Dennis Briggs to senior fullback Joe Pastorello with 10 minutes left enabled Katella to tie Costa Mesa in front of 500 at Newport Harbor High School.
Katella (2-1-1) started the game quickly, driving on its first series 67 yards to the Costa Mesa 2-yard line. But a fumbled handoff between Briggs and Pastorello was recovered at the line of scrimmage by Costa Mesa’s Quoc Phan.
Two series later, on a first-down play on the Katella 20, Costa Mesa’s Shawn Leffingwell broke off tackle for a touchdown.
The game featured two of Orange County’s workhorse running backs, Costa Mesa’s Manny Bonilla and Pastorello. Bonilla carried the ball 17 times for 88 yards. Pastorello carried 18 times for 97 yards.
Mustang quarterback Rich Schones completed 8 of 28 passes for 105 yards. Senior wide receiver Huy Kieu caught the first 5 Schones’ passes for 67 yards before leaving the game with an injury.
The Costa Mesa defense allowed the Knights into Mustang territory only twice. Senior defensive tackle Al Hill sacked Briggs 4 times for a minus 22 yards.
