Greek Leader ‘Fine’ After Heart Surgery

LONDON — Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou underwent a successful heart operation to correct a valve defect Friday, the Greek Embassy reported.
“Everything is fine; it was completed satisfactorily,” an embassy spokesman said.
The surgery on Papandreou, 69, at Harefield Hospital near London, lasted about six hours, he said.
Papandreou is suffering from a condition in which the main valve carrying blood from the heart narrows and has to be replaced by an artificial valve.
He has been hospitalized in Britain since Aug. 25, carrying out government duties from his bed.
