Local News in Brief : Fire Officials Issue a ‘Red Flag Alert’

Extremely dry Santa Ana winds in the Southland on Wednesday prompted the Los Angeles County Fire Department to declare a “Red Flag Alert,” a warning that a “very bad” fire danger exists.
Fire Department spokeswoman Diana Castro said the condition, with soaring temperatures into the high 90s, was expected to last through the weekend before the high-pressure system moves on.
Residents were urged to be especially careful in brush regions rendered tender-dry by the conditions, she said.
“Householders should clear grass and brush near their dwellings,” she said. “And do not smoke or light fires in mountain areas.”
