Locusts Devastate Crops in Senegal

DAKAR, Senegal — Locusts moving south from Mauritania have infested parts of northern Senegal, devastating fields of rice, sorghum and millet, government officials said Tuesday.
The swarms of locusts, numbering 300 to 400 per square yard, invaded the coastal regions of Saint Louis and Louga in northwestern Senegal on Monday, the Office for Vegetable Protection said. The office said aerial spraying will be needed to ensure that the locust invasion is checked in this west African nation.
On Monday, locusts darkened the sky in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, covering the sun for 90 minutes as the swarm moved westward.
