Data General Corp. announced that it will take a charge of about $45 million against operations in its fourth quarter and consolidate various functions to save the company $50 million annually and cut 800 jobs. The new reductions bring to about 4,000 the number of jobs cut since 1985. The Westboro, Mass., computer company said it has made arrangements for job placement services and pay and benefits continuation based on years of service of affected employees.
