Southland Roundup : Brewer Returns to Help Azusa Pacific Win, 23-10

James Brewer, playing in his first game in 5 years, ran 66 yards for a touchdown to ensure Azusa Pacific of a 23-10 victory over La Verne Saturday at Azusa.
Brewer, who attended Azusa in 1983, gave the Cougars (2-0) a 20-10 lead with 8:40 left in the third quarter. He finished with 66 yards in 7 carries.
Quarterback Brian Hunt ran 1 yard for a touchdown to give Azusa Pacific a 13-7 lead with 2:34 left in the first half.
Bob Chapparal had field goals of 34, 21 and 39 yards for the Cougars.
La Verne (0-2) scored on Larry Hoke’s 30-yard pass to John Kusielka and Craig Herrera’s 42-yard field goal.
UC Santa Barbara 16, San Francisco 6--Ross Bauer ran for 91 yards and a 2-yard touchdown as the Gauchos downed the Gators before 4,260 fans at Santa Barbara.
Bauer’s scoring run and another of 2 yards by Ryan Haener took Santa Barbara (2-1) to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.
San Francisco State (0-3) scored on Wes Werrecker’s 12-yard pass to Wade Hampton with 7:40 left in the first half.
Redlands 47, Pomona Pitzer 0--Eric Carlson rushed for 103 yards in 10 carries and scored 3 touchdowns as the Bulldogs won an SCIAC game in a rout at Pomona.
Carlson scored on runs of 13, 13 and 8 yards, while Ruffin Patterson added 105 yards in 8 carries, including an 85-yard scoring run, while playing only the first half.
Quarterback Robert Lough completed 7 of 10 passes for 79 yards for Redlands (1-1), including touchdowns of 5 yards to Carl Schroeder and 15 yards to Rick Bennett.
Occidental 29, Claremont-Mudd 0--Quarterback Tony Werebelow passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for another as the Tigers won an SCIAC game at Los Angeles.
Werebelow completed 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards, including scores of 9 yards to Rick Freeman and 7 yards to Jeff Bedell to lead Occidental (2-1, 2-0).
Claremont-Mudd is 0-2, 0-1.
Cal Poly (SLO) 15, Angelo State 8--Dan Eastman kicked field goals of 32, 27 and 45 yards to lead the Mustangs to a victory at San Luis Obispo.
Tom Sullivan connected with Terry Cole on a 60-yard touchdown pass play that gave Cal Poly (1-2) a 12-0 halftime lead.
Angelo State (1-2) scored on Mickey Russell’s 14-yard pass to Kelvin Kelly with 45 seconds left.
Humboldt State 37, Whittier 14--Paul Wienecke ran for touchdowns of 1 and 72 yards as the Lumberjacks won at Whittier.
Mike Haney ran 4 yards for a touchdown for Whittier (1-1) and hooked up with Ian Yates on a 66-yard touchdown pass play.
