Who’s Hot; Who’s Not

Nobody was hotter than El Segundo’s Erik Evans on the first weekend of prep football. The 5-8, 180-pound tailback-defensive back scored five touchdowns on runs of 66, 21 and 42 yards and on receptions of 7 and 24 yards in a 41-0 win over Mira Costa.
Gardena’s Tim Higginbotham did a bit of everything to help his team beat Jefferson, 20-13. The 6-foot, 230-pound senior caught a two-point conversion, recovered a fumble, caused a fumble and made two touchdown saving tackles.
Coast Christian of Redondo Beach extended its area-leading winning streak to 13 games by routing Victor Valley Christian, 42-0.
South Torrance’s John Morton scored four touchdowns and tallied all but one of the points in a 27-20 victory over Torrance. Morton scored on a 100-yard punt return, on runs of 11, 10 and 22 yards and on a two-point conversion.
North Torrance’s football team is singing its September Song again. The Saxons committed a myriad of mistakes (penalties, turnovers, etc.) in an 18-0 loss to Palos Verdes and now own a 2-9 record in non-league games over the last three seasons.
The Harbor College offensive line allowed nine sacks in Saturday’s 42-25 loss to El Camino College-- an unsettling statistic for Coach Chris Ferragamo, a former center at Banning who has prided himself on sound offensive lines.
Loyola Marymount’s water polo team was outscored, 71-16, in dropping all four of its games in the Pepperdine Tournament last weekend. Loyola suffered its biggest embarrassment Saturday in a 27-4 loss to tournament champion UCLA.
West Torrance, the 1982 CIF Coastal Conference football champion, has just one win in its last 12 games. The Warriors went 1-8-1 last year and opened the season with a loss to Verbum Dei.
