Reversing an earlier plan for a new City Hall, the City Council has approved a $2.2-million renovation of the 58-year-old structure to make it larger, accessible to the handicapped and better able to withstand an earthquake.
Under the plan approved Monday, the renovation will include a new council chamber and an elevator. It will also expand the current structure from 16,123 square feet to 22,000 square feet.
The earlier plan, approved by a different council before the April election, called for a larger, $3-million structure. The present council contains three new members.
