Regarding Peter Greenberg’s article, “Reservations About Room Deals” (Aug. 21), thanks for warning travelers on the ins and outs of 800 numbers.
Recently I encountered the same sort of situation at the Best Western Airport Plaza Hotel in Honolulu, one of the many area hotels that advertise on a hotel board at the Honolulu airport. These boards advertise rates and supply phones for arriving passengers without reservations.
After calling numerous hotels and mentioning that I was at Arrival Gate H, as the instructions on the board specified, I was surprised at the high cost of a single night’s stay. On checking again with some of those same hotels, this time not mentioning my arrival gate, I received much lower quotes. In the end, I saved about $10 to $15, not a great deal, but at least I feel richer in knowledge.
