Harrah’s marquee, a South Lake Tahoe landmark for a generation, will disappear next week as it falls victim to a new city ordinance. The marquee, located just west of the Nevada-California line, will be torn down to comply with a law forbidding signs with changing messages. The law is primarily aimed at motels that display rotating prices. But it applies to Harrah’s marquee as well. The huge sign was erected in 1959 upon completion of Harrah’s South Shore Room. The first entertainer promoted was Red Skelton, who helped dedicate the showroom.
