The California Chamber of Commerce endorsed the insurance industry’s position in the fight over five insurance initiatives on the Nov. 8 ballot, giving the industry a powerful ally. The chamber’s board, voting in Sacramento, supported Proposition 104, which would install a no-fault auto insurance system, and Proposition 106, designed to slash lawyers’ contingency fees. The board voted to oppose Propositions 100 and 103 calling for price rollbacks and rate regulation while preserving lawyers’ prerogatives and all victims’ benefits. An industry spokesman declared, “We’re elated with the support of the major representative of business in California.” The chamber had supported the industry in the deep-pockets initiative campaign, Proposition 51, in 1986.
