Local News in Brief : Murder Charge Filed in Girl’s Death
A Compton man and his girlfriend were charged Thursday with murder for the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old girl who was struck in the head by a stray bullet fired during a gun battle between the couple.
Walter Herron, 25, and Janie LeDay, 33, remained in custody pending arraignment on one count of murder.
Prosecutors said 2-year-old Leanner Raye Moore was struck by a stray bullet Monday while she was in the arms of her 22-year-old mother across from the Imperial Courts Housing Project. The bullet was fired during a domestic dispute that escalated into a gun battle between Herron and LeDay, each of whom had a pistol.
It has not yet been determined who fired the fatal bullet, Deputy Dist. Atty. Larry Morrison said.
