Herbert Lawrence Anderson, 74, a member of a team of Manhattan Project physicists who produced the first sustained nuclear reaction. At the time of his death, Anderson was a staff physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratories, where he worked with the Manhattan Project during World War II developing the atomic bomb. He also taught at the University of Chicago after the war. In Santa Fe, N.M., on Saturday of a longtime respiratory ailment.
